Zaporizhzhia plant staff hit; Moscow says one killed

Moscow-installed authorities said a Ukrainian drone strike hit a transport stop in Enerhodar on Tuesday, killing one person and wounding 17 others, most of them workers at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

The Russian-installed management of the plant said Ukrainian forces carried out a targeted strike that killed a “nuclear specialist” and injured 17 people, “most of them employees” of the facility.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had been informed that a drone exploded at a bus stop used by staff travelling to the plant at around 06:00. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi called on military commanders responsible to stop what the UN nuclear watchdog described as unacceptable actions that pose great risks to nuclear safety.

Russian forces captured the Zaporizhzhia plant in March 2022 after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The facility, Europe's largest nuclear plant, is in Enerhodar near the frontline in southern Ukraine and has repeatedly been at the centre of safety concerns during the war.

Both Russia and Ukraine regularly accuse each other of carrying out strikes around the site.

Uncertainty notes

The casualty figures and responsibility for the strike are attributed to Moscow-installed authorities and are not independently established in the supplied information.
