Zambia vice president survives helicopter crash

Zambia's Vice President Mutale Nalumango said she and seven other people survived unharmed after their helicopter crashed just after takeoff on July 9 while they were campaigning.

Nalumango, 71, told Diamond TV online that the helicopter came down shortly after leaving a campaign rally in the northeastern town of Nakonde.

“We were eight and all of us are fine,” she said.

The cause of the crash was not clear. Nalumango said the helicopter was badly damaged.

A government statement said she underwent a routine medical check after the crash and was discharged in good health.

Zambia is due to hold elections on August 13. President Hakainde Hichilema is seeking a second term.
