WTO rules against Turkey in China electric car case

The World Trade Organization has ruled against Turkey in a dispute over duties on imported Chinese electric cars.

China filed a complaint in October 2024 after Turkey imposed an additional 40 percent in customs duties on electric vehicles imported from China.

The WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body concluded that the additional duties were inconsistent with several trade agreements dating back to 1994.

Both sides can appeal. The appeals process has been jammed since late 2019 because the United States has blocked the nomination of judges.

Uncertainty notes

It is not stated whether either side will appeal the ruling.
