World Bank puts Venezuela quake damage at $19.6 billion
The World Bank estimated that twin earthquakes in Venezuela last month caused at least $19.6 billion in direct physical damage and said public reconstruction funding needs to increase quickly to avoid lasting economic effects.
According to the World Bank assessment, damage to residential buildings accounted for almost half of the total, at $9.3 billion. It estimated damage to non-residential buildings at $5 billion and infrastructure losses at $5.2 billion.
Officials have said the June 24 earthquakes killed at least 5,398 people.
