Woman injured in Modena car ramming dies

A 55-year-old woman who was seriously injured in a May 16 car ramming in Modena, northern Italy, has died of her injuries, the local hospital said.

The woman was hurt along with her husband and six other people when Salim el Koudri, a 31-year-old Italian of Moroccan origin, ran over eight people on a busy street in the city centre. The hospital said the woman never regained consciousness.

Another victim, who had both legs amputated, has returned home to Germany.

El Koudri, an unemployed economics graduate, had previously been treated for a schizoid personality disorder. After the ramming, he ran from the car but was stopped by a passerby and later arrested.

Modena Mayor Massimo Mezzetti said the death strengthened the city's demand for full justice for those responsible. He said the city would continue to support the injured and would represent what he called a wounded community at the upcoming trial.
