Venezuela frees 6 women political prisoners, NGO says

Venezuelan authorities freed six women described as political prisoners on Friday, including Emirlendris Benitez, who had been accused of taking part in a drone plot to assassinate former leader Nicolas Maduro, rights group Foro Penal said.

“Political prisoner Emirlendris Benitez and five other women have been released,” Foro Penal director Alfredo Romero said on X.

The release came a day after opposition figure Dinorah Figuera vowed to fight for the release of political prisoners in formal talks with the interim government. The talks are aimed at reconciliation after Maduro's ouster by US forces in January.

Uncertainty notes

The available confirmation of the release is from Foro Penal.
