Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,438

Venezuela's official death toll from twin earthquakes in June rose to 6,438 on Monday, Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodriguez said, as relatives and rescuers continued searching rubble nearly two months after the disaster.

The latest figure was up from 6,301 last week.

The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes struck near Venezuela's coast on June 24 and knocked down at least 190 buildings. Authorities say at least 60,000 homes were affected, including 24,000 left uninhabitable.

Thousands of residents remain in temporary camps. In Caracas, heavy rain destroyed some tents housing victims over the weekend.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez's government has promised housing for people affected by the quakes. So far, 335 homes have been made available out of 4,000 promised by the end of the year.
