Vanuatu earthquake: no tsunami warning after 6.1 quake

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Vanuatu on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, with no early reports of damage and no immediate tsunami warning from Vanuatu's natural hazards department.

USGS placed the epicentre about 56 kilometres northeast of the coastal village of Port Olry. It said the quake was at a depth of 188 kilometres.

Earthquakes are common in Vanuatu, a low-lying South Pacific archipelago that straddles the tectonic Ring of Fire, an arc of seismic activity through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
