USS Abraham Lincoln conditions draw Senate demands

US congressional Democrats demanded answers on Aug. 12 about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln after reports of food shortages, broken plumbing and mental health crises during the aircraft carrier's extended deployment.

In a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Senator Richard Blumenthal called for the Navy to account for conditions aboard the carrier. He said the USS Abraham Lincoln had been deployed for more than 250 days and had not come ashore in more than 200 days, setting a record for consecutive days at sea.

Blumenthal cited what he called widespread reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing problems, deteriorating mental health, deck safety concerns and other problems aboard the ship.

Senator Ruben Gallego called on X for an official oversight visit by a bipartisan Senate delegation to investigate the reported conditions.

The USS Abraham Lincoln left San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025, for duty in the South China Sea and was later rerouted to the Middle East before US-Israeli attacks on Iran that began February 28.

MSNOW reported that family members clashed with Navy leaders in two recent meetings over difficult conditions, including food shortages, faced by the 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the carrier. The outlet reported that some people described severe mental health issues and attempted suicides on board.

Gallego wrote that accounts of crew members threatening to jump from the ship were a warning about conditions including moldy showers, sporadic hot water, rationed meals and soap, broken toilets, and 12- to 16-hour shifts without days off.

The US Navy did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.
