US suspends Michoacan avocado imports over security
The United States suspended avocado imports from Michoacan, Mexico's top-producing avocado state, over security concerns, an industry group and authorities said on August 5.
The Association of Avocado Producers and Packers said fruit destined for export would not be authorised. It said its representatives would meet authorities to address the security situation in the state.
The Michoacan state government said the suspension was a “preventive measure” after arrests of criminal leaders known for extorting money from the regional avocado industry.
The US Embassy in Mexico said it had suspended all activities in Michoacan since August 5 after a “threat against US interests”. US authorities routinely inspect avocado export packers in Mexico.
Michoacan is a hotspot of fighting between crime gangs that have diversified into extorting agricultural businesses. In 2024, avocado shipments were temporarily suspended after two inspectors were assaulted and temporarily detained in the state.
