US stocks edge up despite renewed US-Iran fighting
US stocks edged up in early trading Thursday as semiconductor shares lifted Wall Street despite renewed fighting between the United States and Iran.
Shortly after the open, the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.5% to 25,991.92. The S&P 500 added 0.3% to 7,505.39, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1% to 52,305.03.
Micron Technology shares rose 7.3%, helping support the wider technology sector. Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers said investors were again buying technology stocks despite events in the Middle East, adding that the size of the sector can mask weakness elsewhere in the market.
AFP reported that fighting had resumed between the United States and Iran, with Tehran targeting US allies in the region and American strikes hitting the perimeter of an Iranian nuclear power plant. Oil prices rose after the conflict reignited.
