US plans $57mn funding for Venezuela's El Sistema
The US State Department plans to work with Congress to provide $57 million to Venezuela's Fundacion Musical Simon Bolivar, better known as El Sistema, American embassy officials said Thursday.
A US embassy statement said the money would help complete a teacher training center and support related cultural education programming.
El Sistema, founded in 1975, is a major music and arts education institution in Venezuela. The embassy statement said the funding was part of the Trump administration's commitment to Venezuela's long-term recovery and economic stabilization.
The announcement comes as Washington works with Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodriguez, who assumed power in January after former leader Nicolas Maduro was captured in a US military operation. The United States also recently pledged $300 million in aid after twin earthquakes in Venezuela killed more than 2,000 people.
Uncertainty notes
The timing of the $57 million funding and whether Congress has approved it are not specified beyond the State Department plan to work with Congress.
No completion date is given for the teacher training center.
