Trump tells ICE to resume traffic stops after fatal shootings

US President Donald Trump criticized a Department of Homeland Security decision to pause Immigration and Customs Enforcement traffic stops after two fatal shootings in less than a week.

DHS halted the practice after a Colombian man was shot dead in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday and a Mexican man was killed during an operation in Texas last week.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday that ICE could not give up what he called one of its most important and effective crime-fighting tools. He told ICE to be "judicious, fair and smart" and to return to the work.

Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, told reporters at the White House on Tuesday that there was a pause in traffic stops, but said the practice was effective and would return.

ICE agents, tasked with enforcing Trump's immigration crackdown, have faced nationwide backlash over aggressive tactics and over the shooting deaths of two US citizens earlier this year in Minneapolis.

Rights groups identified the man killed in Monday's shooting in Maine as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, 26, a Colombian delivery driver authorized to work in the United States. They said he lived with his wife and three-year-old daughter.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a critic of Trump's immigration policies, called the killing a "murder of a Latin American Colombian at the hands of the US government."

In the Texas shooting last week, immigration authorities said Lorenzo Salgado, 52, had tried to run over an ICE agent. Witnesses disputed that account, according to the source.

No Kings, a coalition of groups protesting Trump's presidency, said the killings were a "horrific hallmark of continued authoritarian overreach by the Trump administration." The group said it stood in solidarity with those affected and would continue fighting against violence by what it described as an unaccountable administration.
