US Ebola patient recovers after Germany treatment
An American Ebola patient transferred to Germany for treatment last month has recovered and left Frankfurt University Hospital after about two weeks of care, the hospital said Tuesday.
The World Health Organization had previously identified the man as a humanitarian worker who had been at the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in the northeast Democratic Republic of Congo.
Germany's health ministry said last month that US authorities had requested help because Germany had expertise in treating Ebola cases and because of the shorter flight time from the DRC.
The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak on May 15. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is no vaccine or cure. DRC officials said Sunday they had registered more than 3,000 cases in the latest outbreak, including 1,354 deaths.
Another US patient with Ebola was quarantined with his family at Berlin's Charite Hospital at the end of May. He also recovered after two weeks of treatment.
