Two killed in Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia; Zelensky says oil facilities hit

Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia early Monday killed two people in Rostov-on-Don and set buildings on fire, Russian officials said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces also struck an export terminal and oil facilities far from the front line.

Russia’s defence ministry said air defences intercepted 276 drones overnight.

Rostov region governor Yuri Slyusar said a married couple was killed in Rostov-on-Don. He later said warehouses caught fire and several buildings were damaged, including a homeless shelter.

Zelensky said Ukrainian “long-range” strikes hit an export terminal in the western Rostov region, about 250 kilometres from the front line.

He said other strikes targeted oil facilities in the Yaroslavl region and the Udmurt Republic, which he said was 1,300 kilometres from Ukraine’s border.

The governors of Rostov, Yaroslavl and Udmurtia reported overnight drone attacks but did not mention damage to oil facilities.

Authorities in Russia’s Belgorod region said Ukrainian drones wounded 12 people, including two children, and set fire to an apartment building.

Russian strikes on Ukraine wounded at least four people early Monday, regional officials said. The wounded included an 88-year-old woman who suffered burns across much of her body.

The United Nations said last month was the deadliest for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022 as Russia increased long-range strikes on Ukrainian towns and cities.
