Ukraine military aid hit €7.2bn in June, Kiel says

Military aid allocated to Ukraine reached 7.2 billion euros, or $8.3 billion, in June, the highest monthly amount since US funding ended, Kiel Institute data showed on August 13.

The institute's Ukraine Support Tracker said the June figure was the third-biggest monthly military funding increase from donors since Russia's invasion in February 2022. It was the highest since Ukraine received 9.04 billion euros in April 2024.

The increase was driven largely by the European Union's new Ukraine Support Loan. The Kiel Institute said the loan helped European institutions allocate 4.3 billion euros of military aid in May and June.

The 90-billion-euro EU loan was introduced to support Ukraine's budgetary and defence needs in 2026 and 2027. Germany allocated 700 million euros, Denmark 600 million euros and the Netherlands 500 million euros to support Ukraine's military.

The institute said longer-term funding remains below the level recorded before US funding dried up in February 2025. Before then, donors allocated an average of 3.46 billion euros per month in military aid to Kyiv. Since then, the average has fallen to 2.94 billion euros.

The Kiel Institute said the United States no longer directly contributes to Ukraine's war effort, but US weapons remain important because Europe is buying weapons from US defence companies and receiving deliveries from existing US military stockpiles.

Federico Mellace, lead analyst of the Ukraine Support Tracker, said the United States remains a key supplier of systems such as Patriot, for which Europe has limited alternatives. He said the longer-term question is whether Europe can develop and produce reliable substitutes for key US defence systems.
