UK train derails in Essex, second in two days

A train derailed in Wickford in Essex on Friday, the second railway derailment reported in England in two days.

British Transport Police said the rear carriages derailed while remaining upright and that officers were responding with paramedics and the fire service. It said there were currently no reported injuries.

Train operator Greater Anglia said services on the line between London and Essex were disrupted.

The incident came after a busy commuter train between London and southeast England veered off the tracks near Lewes on Thursday. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is investigating the cause of the Lewes derailment and said it expected to give an update next week.

Two people who sustained serious injuries in Thursday's derailment were deemed not to be in a life-threatening condition, and 18 other injured passengers were discharged from hospital.
