Company says Norwegian tanker was hit by explosion off Oman
A crisis response company said a Norwegian tanker was hit by an explosion caused by an unidentified device off the coast of Oman early Tuesday.
MTI Network said shipping company Stolt Tankers reported that the tanker Stolt Magnesium suffered an explosion from an unidentified external device while in the Arabian Sea off Oman at about 00:40 am local time, or 2000 GMT Monday.
The explosion caused a fire in the ship's engine room. An MTI Network spokesman said all crew members were safe and accounted for.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency also reported that a tanker said it had been hit by an unknown projectile on the starboard side of its engine room, 40 nautical miles northeast of Qalhat, Oman.
Earlier Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates said Iran had attacked two ships in the Strait of Hormuz with missiles, killing one crew member and wounding eight. The source said those strikes followed a fresh round of United States strikes against Tehran, marking a new escalation in resumed hostilities in the Middle East war.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major shipping route. The source said one fifth of the world's oil passed through it before the war broke out in February. It also said the waterway is a major point of contention between the United States and Iran. Trump said Monday he would charge all cargo shipped through the waterway to pay for keeping it open and would reinstate a blockade on Iranian ships that had been lifted last month.

UK Maritime Trade Operations said it received a report of an incident 13 nautical miles southeast of Limah, Oman.
The tanker reported being hit by a missile while travelling outbound on the southern route.
UKMTO said authorities are investigating.
The report came as Iran and the United States exchanged fire over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
