Uganda boxers unaccounted for after Commonwealth Games

Members of Uganda’s boxing team were unaccounted for after competing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Police Scotland said on Wednesday.

Police Scotland said it had received reports of several athletes who were unaccounted for and was making enquiries while engaging with the UK interior ministry.

Muhangi Moses, president of the Ugandan Boxing Federation, told AFP in Kampala that only two members of Uganda’s six-person boxing team had returned home after the first athletes arrived back on Tuesday evening.

Moses said the four who had not returned were team captain Nuhu Batte, one other male team member and two female team members. He said it was too early to call it a disappearance because the athletes’ UK visas were still valid and some team members were expected to return later in the week or at the weekend.

Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competed in the Games, whose closing ceremony was held on August 2. Aziz Abdul, a grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, was among the Ugandan boxing team members who returned home.

Games chief executive Phil Batty told the UK’s Press Association on Monday that organisers worked with Police Scotland, Border Force and UK visas and immigration to ensure arrivals and departures followed regulations.
