Uber fined €825m in Netherlands over driver accounts
Uber has been fined 825 million euros in the Netherlands for deactivating drivers' accounts without informing them, the Dutch data protection authority confirmed Friday.
A spokesperson for the authority said the judgement had been agreed Monday. The case relates to incidents in Europe between 2020 and 2022.
The ruling is based on European data regulations that say people should not be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing.
The case began with a complaint against Uber in France, but was heard in the Netherlands because the US ride-hailing company's European headquarters are in Amsterdam.
Uber said it contests the decision and the “disproportionate” fine, and will appeal.
