Two Romanian climbers found dead in Italian Alps

The bodies of two Romanian climbers who had been missing since last week were found on Monday in the Gran Paradiso massif in the Italian Alps, authorities told AFP.

Authorities in the Aosta Valley, a northern Italian region bordering Switzerland and France, said the two Romanian nationals had not made contact since leaving a mountain refuge on July 9. Their ages were not disclosed.

After several days of helicopter searches, regional authorities said the bodies were found on Monday morning at the bottom of a crevasse about 20 metres deep.

According to the Italian National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, mountain accidents in Italy caused 528 deaths in 2025, up 13 percent from 466 deaths in 2024.
