Trump threatens countries doing business with Iran
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was launching a major economic campaign against Iran and threatened economic punishment against any country that helps it or does business with it.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump described the move as “Economic Warfare and Isolation” on an unprecedented scale. He said any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to provide any type of “lifeline” to Iran would face “tremendous” economic consequences.
Trump did not specify what punishment other countries would face, and he did not name any country other than Iran.
The comments came nearly a week after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States would impose economic isolation on Iran “like the world has never seen before.”
The pressure campaign was announced as the war neared its sixth month. A recent lull in missile strikes has not produced an immediate diplomatic or military off-ramp.
The Strait of Hormuz remained a flashpoint after a framework US-Iran deal to reopen the shipping corridor collapsed. In recent days, both sides have said messages were being exchanged, but Trump said Tuesday that talks were off and posted a social media message suggesting the strait could be a “NEW U.S. Territory.”
