Trump tells CNN reporter Kristen Holmes to be quiet
President Donald Trump told CNN reporter Kristen Holmes to "be quiet" and called her "fake news" on Monday after the White House criticised her for asking about his aide Natalie Harp.
Holmes asked Trump during an Oval Office event to respond to comments by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff about Harp, one of Trump's executive assistants.
The White House's Rapid Response team then posted on X that Holmes had asked a "disgusting and inhumane question" and linked to video of Trump's response. It later criticised her for raising the subject during an event held to honour a teenage lifeguard who saved a child.
Trump also called Holmes "very disrespectful" as she asked a question about North Korea. He told her: "You're a loud, boisterous person, you're fake news, be quiet."
CNN said the attacks on Holmes were "beneath the office" and said it stood behind her.
Ossoff had accused Trump in a campaign speech on Sunday of wanting to "build his ballroom and travel with Natalie" instead of doing his job. Trump dismissed Ossoff as a "Pee-wee Herman lookalike" and defended construction of a $400 million White House ballroom, but did not mention Harp.
Harp has drawn recent internet commentary after it emerged that she was one of the few aides with Trump during a secret Air Force One swap in July. She is frequently seen at Trump's side and has been described as supplying him with printed information.
Uncertainty notes
The nature of the relationship referenced in the question about Trump and Harp is not established.
