Trump tariff refunds reach about $100 billion

The US government has refunded about $100 billion to importers who paid Trump administration tariffs later struck down by the Supreme Court, court filings show.

The amount is about 60 percent of roughly $166 billion collected after President Donald Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose duties on trading partners.

The Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump had exceeded his authority in using that law for the tariffs. His sector-specific tariffs, which rely on different legal grounds, remain in place.

In an August 4 court filing, a US Customs and Border Protection official said about $128.68 billion in potential and certified refunds had been accepted for processing as of July 31. Of that amount, about $100 billion had been completed and sent to the Treasury Department for disbursement, the official said.

Since the ruling, Trump has turned to new means to reimpose tariffs on dozens of trading partners, leading to further court challenges.
