Trump questions England tactics after World Cup semi-final defeat

US President Donald Trump on Friday questioned England's tactics in their World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.

Speaking at a reception in New York alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Trump referred to England captain Harry Kane, saying he had played golf with him in Florida 18 months earlier.

Trump said England may have made a mistake by making Kane a defensive player after taking the lead. He added that he did not know about soccer or coaching, but said teams needed to be more offensive.

England coach Thomas Tuchel has been criticised for replacing two forwards with defenders in the final half hour of Wednesday's match against Argentina. The source says England then had to sit back, although Kane stayed on the field.

Lionel Messi exploited space and provided the assists for Argentina's two goals, which sent Argentina into the final.

Tuchel said Friday that he stood by his decisions. He said he did not regret the move, thought England had become too passive, and was trying to help the team.
