Trump pays $5.6 million to E. Jean Carroll after civil jury verdict
US President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll after a civil jury found he sexually assaulted and defamed her, a court filing showed Tuesday. Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said a unanimous nine-person jury had found Trump liable three years earlier and that Carroll had now received the damages payment awarded because of that verdict. The US Supreme Court refused in late June to hear Trump's appeal against the original May 2023 judgment, essentially making that decision final. Carroll, a former journalist and columnist who is now 82, accused Trump of assaulting her in a dressing room at a New York department store in 1996. After the allegations appeared in a 2019 book, Trump called her a "nut job" and said she had made up the case. In a separate defamation case in New York, Trump was ordered to pay Carroll $83.3 million. That judgment was upheld on appeal, but its enforcement remains suspended.
