Trump announces $22.5bn Dulles airport renovation
Donald Trump announced a $22.5 billion renovation of Dulles International Airport on Wednesday, adding to a series of projects he has launched in the Washington, DC region.
Trump told journalists the airport was “considered one of the worst airports anywhere in the world” and said the project was part of his effort to make Washington “safe and beautiful again.”
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, speaking alongside Trump, said the project would cost $22.5 billion and that United Airlines, for which Dulles is a major hub, would pay part of the bill.
Dulles is about 25 miles from Washington and is the area’s main international airport. More than 29 million travelers passed through it in 2025, the highest number on record.
Trump has also begun or proposed other projects in the capital region, including work at the Kennedy Center, the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial, the White House East Wing, an arch near Arlington National Cemetery and East Potomac Golf Links.
Uncertainty notes
The share of the renovation cost to be paid by United Airlines was not specified.
No evidence was provided for Trump’s claim that vandals caused setbacks at the Reflecting Pool.
