Switzerland carriage accident kills one, injures 12

A horse-drawn carriage carrying tourists ran out of control in Val Roseg, Switzerland, killing one person and injuring 12 others, police said Sunday.

Police said about 40 people were on two carriages in woods near the Italian border on Saturday when the driver lost control. A 73-year-old woman was killed, and two of the injured were in serious condition.

According to a police statement, the driver realised on a sloping stretch that the carriage's braking power was insufficient and tried to steer the three-horse carriage toward flatter ground to slow it down. Police said one horse fell, the driver lost control and the carriage hit a tree, throwing some passengers from the vehicle.

Police said they had opened an investigation.
