Swiss bars get all-night hours for World Cup quarter-final

Pubs and restaurants in many Swiss cantons and cities will be allowed to stay open overnight so fans can watch Switzerland's World Cup quarter-final against Argentina.

The match kicks off in Kansas City at 3am Swiss time on Sunday. Geneva authorities said public establishments in the cafe-restaurant and bar categories could open without time restrictions during the night of July 11 to 12 to show the game.

Switzerland are playing in a World Cup quarter-final for the first time since 1954. They face Argentina, the reigning world champions.

The ATS-Keystone agency reported that Jura and Bern had granted similar exceptional waivers. Curfews have also been lifted in cities including Lausanne, Sion and Sierre, while Zurich has granted a "Freinacht" for indoor restaurants and bars.

Basel-Landschaft authorised extended opening hours for restaurants and bars, including temporary World Cup venues, until 6am local time Sunday.
