Sweden to form school attack commission after killing

Sweden will form a commission to propose measures against school attacks, the government said on Monday, days after a sword-wielding assailant killed a 17-year-old girl and wounded three people at a high school in Fagersta.

Education and Integration Minister Simona Mohamsson said the government would appoint a school attack commission to suggest new prevention measures.

“In recent years, Sweden has seen several serious and deadly attacks on schools,” Mohamsson said. She added that the idea of fully open schools was positive, but that schools could not allow unauthorised people free access.

Mohamsson said she did not want to speculate on what changes the commission might recommend.

Police said over the weekend that they were still investigating a motive for the Fagersta attack. Police opened fire on the 18-year-old suspect before taking him into custody.

Swedish media reported that the assailant had a previous assault conviction and wore a helmet and carried a sword. The reports compared the details with a 2015 school attack in Trollhattan, where a 21-year-old killed three people in a racially motivated attack.

The government cited a series of deadly attacks at educational institutions in Sweden. In February 2025, a 35-year-old man killed 10 people at an adult education centre in Orebro. In March 2022, an 18-year-old student stabbed two teachers to death at a secondary school in Malmo.
