Sweden convicts ex-army consultant in Russia spy case

A Swedish court convicted a former computer consultant to the Swedish army on Wednesday for trying to hand over secrets to Russia and ordered him to undergo psychiatric treatment.

The court said the 34-year-old man, identified only as R.T., had a serious mental disorder. It said he went to Moscow in November 2025 seeking to pass on secrets obtained through his work for the Swedish army.

According to the court statement, he had contacted Russia's FSB and GRU intelligence services and offered the secrets in return for Russian nationality and special protection.

Prosecutors said the man used artificial intelligence to create a document titled "Petition for Military Protection via GRU Pathway" explaining why he was seeking protection.

R.T. denied the charges during a three-day trial that was held mostly behind closed doors. Sweden's SAPO intelligence service said he is also under investigation for conspiracy to commit murder.
