Statue of Liberty speedboat flip kills mother, baby

A speedboat flipped near the Statue of Liberty in New York, killing a 27-year-old mother and a 5-month-old baby, police said.

Police said the vessel capsized late Saturday near Liberty Island. Twelve people were rescued from the water.

Officers said Manuel Hernandez, 46, was arrested on 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Federal prosecutors told AFP on Monday that Hernandez had been arrested over the weekend and was in federal custody.

An Italian restaurant in Manhattan, Il Punto, identified the woman as Sara Sanchez, the wife of one of its employees, and said the baby, Antonella Garcia, was the second person killed.

The restaurant said it had launched an online fundraiser for Sanchez's husband, Andres Garcia, and said the family also had a six-year-old son, Salvador.
