Niger state media says 16 soldiers killed in western attack
Sixteen soldiers were killed in an attack in western Niger, the country's ANP state news agency reported Sunday.
ANP said a terrorist attack targeted a military deployment in the Tera area of Tillaberi region on Friday July 17. It said 23 soldiers were wounded, including nine seriously. ANP also said 15 terrorists were killed.
The attack took place near Niger's borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. ANP said operations to search for the enemy, conduct sweeps and secure the area were continuing.
Niger has faced deadly attacks by jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State for the past decade. The report said the military regime that took power in July 2023 has failed to contain the violence.
