Spider-Man: Brand New Day tops $2bn, estimates show
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has brought in more than $2 billion globally since its July 31 release, according to industry watcher Exhibitor Relations, after another estimated $70 million weekend in North American cinemas.
The superhero film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, stayed at the top of the North American box office for a third weekend. The Hollywood Reporter said it is now Sony Pictures’ highest-ever grossing film.
The latest Marvel film opened with $360 million domestically, which was the biggest domestic debut weekend of all time on a non-inflation-adjusted basis.
Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” was second, taking $23.2 million domestically for Universal in its fifth weekend.
Warner Bros.’ sci-fi thriller “The End of Oak Street,” starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, opened in third place with $21 million. “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” opened fourth with an estimated $20.5 million for Paramount.
“Katseye: Wild Hearts,” a film about the pop girl group of the same name, came fifth with $3.6 million for Trafalgar Releasing.
Industry analyst David A. Gross said box office business remained “extremely strong” even as the second half of August usually slows when children begin returning to school.
Rounding out the top 10 were “SIX The Musical Live!” with $3 million, “The Brink of War” with $2.7 million, “Toy Story 5” with $2.3 million, “One Night Only” with $2 million and “Your Name. 10th Anniversary” with $1.6 million.
