Spain wildfire kills 11, many believed foreign

A wildfire in southern Spain killed 11 people in the Los Gallardos area of Almeria province, and many of the victims are believed to have been foreigners, authorities said Friday.

Formal identification was still under way. Antonio Sanz, Andalusia's minister for emergencies, said “everything appears to indicate” that most, or possibly all, of those who died were foreigners.

Sanz said four victims were found in a right-hand-drive car, suggesting they might have been British nationals. The other seven may have died while trying to flee on foot through difficult terrain.

Eight people were also injured in the blaze, which broke out on Thursday and spread quickly through the popular tourist region.
