Spain wildfire forces 600 to evacuate near Portugal
A new wildfire near Fermoselle in western Spain forced the evacuation of more than 600 people near the Portuguese border, emergency services said.
Emergency services said 11 areas were evacuated after the fire broke out on Wednesday, and residents of two other areas were ordered to shelter in place. Authorities did not say how much land had burned, but several roads were closed.
Spain's Military Emergency Unit was deployed to the Level 2 fire, a classification that brings extra support from the central government.
Two other Level 2 fires, at Val de la Loba and San Cipriano del Condado, were active in the same Zamora province in the Castile and Leon region. A separate ongoing fire in the Avila area has burned approximately 50,000 hectares, or 125,000 acres.
