Spain flood and landslide kill two, injure two babies

A flood and landslide triggered by torrential rain killed two women and injured two babies in northwestern Spain on Saturday, regional authorities said.

The emergency services of Castile and Leon said the deaths of two women, aged about 60 and 80, had been confirmed after the disaster in the small village of Manzanedo de Valdueza. It said two babies were treated for bruises and that a missing man in his 80s had been found unharmed.

Firefighters, police, ambulances and the Civil Guard were sent to the scene, which rescue helicopter footage showed surrounded by hilly, forested terrain.

Ponferrada Mayor Marco Morala told reporters that storms in the hills had triggered a large flow of stones, mud and sludge, leading to the deaths. He said the disaster also caused material damage in the neighbouring village of Bouzas.

Local media published images showing a mass of stones and mud that had washed through Manzanedo de Valdueza and flattened a car.
