SoftBank logs $8.4bn Intel investment gain
SoftBank reported a 1.3 trillion yen ($8.4 billion) return on its investment in Intel on Thursday, saying the US chipmaker's higher share price helped support first-quarter earnings even as profit fell from a year earlier.
The Japanese tech investor said net income for the April-June quarter of the 2026-27 financial year was 347.3 billion yen, down 17.7% year on year. A Bloomberg analyst survey had estimated 165.8 billion yen.
SoftBank's earnings can move widely because it invests in technology start-ups and chip companies. Concern about the durability of artificial intelligence-related demand has added to market volatility in recent months.
SoftBank is a major backer of OpenAI. The company said it completed its latest $10 billion investment in the ChatGPT maker in July.
