Kyiv reports building hits after blasts heard in capital

Several blasts were heard in Kyiv overnight from Saturday to Sunday after Ukraine's air force warned that ballistic missiles were heading toward the capital.

One explosion was strong enough to set off alarms in cars parked in the city centre. Moments earlier, Ukraine's air force had said in a Telegram post that ballistic missiles were approaching Kyiv.

Kyiv's military administration reported that an apartment building had been hit in the Shevchenkivsky district and that a shopping and entertainment centre had been hit in the Dniprovsky district. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a home was on fire in the Sviatoshynsky district.

Russia has been firing drones and missiles at Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities almost daily since it launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The latest strikes came after Ukraine sent explosive-laden drones on Saturday to destroy e-commerce warehouses in Russia's Moscow and Tambov regions, killing eight people and causing major fires. In Ukraine, Russian strikes on Saturday killed five people and wounded almost 20 others in regions across the country's southeast.

Kyiv has intensified strikes on Russian territory in recent months. Ukraine calls the attacks retribution for more than four years of bombardment and describes the campaign as "long-range sanctions". The campaign has mostly targeted Russian oil infrastructure and has triggered a fuel crisis in Russia, one of the world's biggest oil-producing countries.
