Serbia snap election likely in October, Vucic says
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said parliamentary elections would most likely be held on October 18 or October 25, signalling a possible snap vote sought by long-running protests.
“Parliamentary elections in Serbia will most likely take place either on October 18 or October 25,” Vucic told national broadcaster RTS on Thursday night. “We will know in a few days,” he said, without giving details.
Serbia's next elections had been due in December 2027. Vucic has repeatedly promised a snap vote but had avoided naming a date.
The protest movement began after a train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2025, killing 16 people. The disaster became a symbol of perceived corruption and led to rolling demonstrations, largely led by students, calling for accountability and then early elections.
An independent counting body said a major rally in Belgrade in May drew about 180,000 people.
Vucic recently said he would resign as president when elections were called. His party colleagues have suggested they would support him as prime minister if they won.

Vucic did not provide details on the timing or process for calling the vote.
