Russian strikes kill at least two in Ukraine, officials say
Russian strikes killed at least two people in Ukraine early Saturday, local authorities said, including reported deaths in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said preliminary information indicated one person was dead and several were injured after a warehouse fire in the capital's Darnytskyi district. The administration had issued an alert for a ballistic missile.
In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, regional military administration head Ivan Fedorov said a Russian drone killed a man and wounded four people.
The strikes followed a series of Russian bombings on Friday that authorities said killed at least 20 people in Ukraine, including 16 in a daytime drone attack on a busy shopping centre in President Volodymyr Zelensky's hometown, Kryvyi Rih.
Regional military governor Oleksandr Ganzha said rescue operations at the Kryvyi Rih site continued through the night and that nine people were missing, including two children. Rescue services said the attack wounded 130 people, including 23 children.
The United Nations reported that Ukraine's civilian death toll so far this year had risen to its highest level since the first months of the war. Kyiv has repeatedly appealed to allies for more support as Russia increases strikes, while diplomatic efforts have not moved Russia and Ukraine toward a deal.
Uncertainty notes
The Kyiv casualty information was described as preliminary.
The exact number of people injured in Kyiv was not specified.
Nine people were reported missing after the Kryvyi Rih attack, so the final casualty toll there may change.
