Kyiv missile attack kills one as Ukraine reports wider Russian strikes
Russia fired ballistic missiles at Kyiv overnight on Sunday, killing one person and wounding 16, Ukrainian officials said, as attacks also hit other Ukrainian cities and domestic political tensions grew over changes in Ukraine's defence leadership.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia carried out one of its largest ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv, launching more than 40 missiles, including 25 ballistic missiles. He said one person was killed and 16 others were wounded. Police said six districts were targeted.
In Kyiv in the morning, journalists saw charred apartment blocks with blown-out windows and damaged, overturned cars. Kyiv resident Ganna Zagorodnia said the missiles came one after another and that the explosions were powerful.
Elsewhere in Ukraine, local military governor Oleg Syniegubov said Russian afternoon strikes killed four people and wounded 20 at a post warehouse in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-biggest city. In Odesa, governor Oleg Kiper said a teenager was killed and 12 people were wounded, including a two-year-old child, after a Russian attack on an amusement park.
Russia denies targeting civilians. It said it struck military facilities and logistics hubs in Kyiv and port infrastructure used by the Ukrainian army in Odesa.
The attacks came as thousands of people gathered for a third consecutive day in major Ukrainian cities to protest against the removal of defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Demonstrators also called for the resignation of Ukraine's chief commander, Oleksandr Syrsky, who reportedly sought Fedorov's dismissal after the two clashed over how to respond to Russia's invasion.
Two senior Ukrainian commanders, navy chief Oleksiy Neizhpapa and air assault force commander Oleg Apostol, backed Syrsky in rare political statements. They called for unity and said divisions were helping the enemy. Apostol criticised what he described as firm judgments from people who had never issued combat orders or taken responsibility for personnel. Neizhpapa said doubts about the Armed Forces of Ukraine during wartime were unacceptable.
Fedorov, who is 35 and has never served in the army, accused Syrsky, who is 60 and Russian-born, of dividing the country. He criticised slow bureaucracy and a lack of flexibility, and questioned whether Ukraine could defeat Russia with Syrsky in charge of the army.
Ukraine has faced a shortage of air defence projectiles for its US-designed Patriot systems since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran. The systems are important for countering ballistic missiles. Russia has intensified raids on Kyiv in recent weeks, launching ballistic missile barrages roughly once a week. Zelensky said protection against ballistic missiles was Ukraine's top priority and that interceptors were needed every day.
Ukraine's air force said 17 of the 25 Russian ballistic missiles fired overnight were intercepted, a rate the report said could suggest Ukraine's air defence situation may be improving.
On the Russian side, Kursk regional governor Alexander Khinshtein said a Ukrainian strike killed one person in the region near the Ukrainian border. Another drone salvo hit the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal near the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, described in the report as a key export route for Kazakh oil and partly owned by Chevron and Shell. Kyiv has intensified strikes on Russian territory in recent months and calls them retaliation for more than four years of bombardments against Ukraine.
