Russian drone strike on Ukraine train kills two, Kyiv says

Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone attack on a passenger train in the southern Odesa region killed two crew members on Thursday.

The train was carrying 340 passengers, and none of them was harmed, the chief executive of Ukraine's state railway operator said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the locomotive of an ordinary passenger train had been destroyed by a jet-powered drone. He said whoever operated the drone could not have been unaware that the target was civilian.

Video published by Ukraine's emergency services showed a fire in the train cab, with the front of the train blown out and mangled.

Zelensky repeated his call for more air defence support and more pressure on Russia. Ukrainian officials say Moscow's forces have repeatedly targeted trains during the four-and-a-half-year war in what Kyiv describes as a campaign to disrupt logistics and hit civilians.
