Russia sanctions list could grow by a third, Kallas says

EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas wants to increase by one third the number of Russian entities sanctioned over the Ukraine war, German newspaper Die Welt reported Monday.

Kallas told Die Welt she was putting forward "the most far-reaching sanctions listings since the start of the war" for the autumn. She was quoted as saying the listings, if adopted, would immediately raise the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by a third.

The European Union has adopted 21 rounds of sanctions against Russia since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The latest comments followed a sanctions package adopted weeks earlier after negotiations among member states, some of which objected to tougher measures.

The sanctions currently target 3,000 individuals and entities, according to the European Commission. Kallas said the measures had deprived Russia's war machine of "over €1 trillion".

Uncertainty notes

The item does not specify which Russian entities would be added to the sanctions list.
The timing and final scope of any adoption remain unresolved.
