Qatar refueling planes get $4.5bn US approval
The United States approved a potential $4.5 billion sale of refueling aircraft to Qatar on Thursday, the State Department said.
Qatar asked to buy up to four KC-46A aircraft equipped with missile warning sensors. The proposed sale has been sent to Congress for approval.
The State Department said the deal would support US national security by improving the security of a strategic regional partner and increasing Qatar's ability to work with US and allied forces.
Qatar has acted as a mediator in efforts to end months of fighting between Washington and Tehran, though talks are currently stalled. It is also involved in mediation over the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Qatar hosts Al-Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East. The base has been targeted several times by Iran during the conflict that began in late February.
Uncertainty notes
The sale is potential and requires congressional approval.
Talks involving Washington and Tehran are currently at a standstill.
