Toronto police say festival shooting victims were targeted

Toronto police said the two people killed in a weekend shooting at a music festival were targeted. Police Chief Myron Demkiw said the victims were males aged 25 and 20 who knew each other, and that police believe they were targeted. Four other people were injured.

Demkiw said the investigation was continuing and declined to comment on potential suspects. He did not say whether the injured victims had ties to those killed.

The shooting happened Saturday night at a music festival in Toronto, Canada's largest city, and sent thousands of people running for safety.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the violence disgusting and said she had spoken with Prime Minister Mark Carney's government about action to stop illegal American guns from reaching Toronto streets.

Asked whether there was evidence that the weapons used in the shooting came from the United States, Demkiw said Toronto police regularly recover crime guns and that, when they can be traced, 85 to 90 percent are traced to the United States. He said that had been the trend in the city for many years.

The report also said President Donald Trump's administration has portrayed Canada as a national security threat, arguing that weak Canadian controls along the northern US border allow criminals and drugs such as fentanyl to move easily. Canadian officials reject those claims and say gun violence in Canada is overwhelmingly linked to illegal weapons brought from the United States, while Canada has highly restrictive gun-purchasing rules.
