Petrobras finds oil signs off Brazil's Amazon coast
Brazilian oil company Petrobras said Friday it had detected signs of oil, gas or both in an exploratory well about 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapa state, in Brazil's Amazon region.
Petrobras said it had identified hydrocarbons in a well that is still being drilled. It said the specific sign was an organic compound indicating the possible presence of oil, gas or both.
The deep-water project began in October 2025 after a five-year process to obtain an environmental permit. The site is in the Equatorial Margin, a maritime region where neighboring Guyana has found large oil reserves.
Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard said the discovery supported the company's optimism about the Brazilian Equatorial Margin and said Petrobras was committed to Brazil's energy security.
The project has been opposed by environmental groups, which have warned of possible threats to a biodiverse area near the world's largest rainforest.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva supports a gradual phaseout of fossil fuels to curb climate change, but believes Brazil needs revenue from hydrocarbons to fund its energy transition. Brazil was the world's ninth-largest oil producer last year.
