Pete Hoekstra ouster petition tops 116,000 in Canada

A Canadian parliamentary petition calling for the removal of US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has passed 116,000 confirmed signatories, according to the Canadian parliament website.

The citizen-led petition calls for Hoekstra to be declared persona non grata and removed from Canada. It accuses him of normalising the Trump administration's threats to annex Canada as the 51st state.

The petition remains open until November 18. After signatures close, Green Party lawmaker Elizabeth May is expected to introduce it in the House of Commons.

Hoekstra, a former Republican congressman from Michigan, arrived in Ottawa in April 2025. In June, he said the idea of the United States annexing Canada would be “a great discussion” for US President Donald Trump to have with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The petition comes as Canadian trade negotiators are in Washington seeking a deal that would include broad tariff relief in exchange for Ottawa dropping certain countermeasures.
