Peru and Venezuela to restore diplomatic relations
Peru and Venezuela will resume diplomatic relations after breaking ties over disputed Venezuelan election results in 2024, both foreign ministries announced.
Caracas cut relations with Lima in July 2024 after Peru recognised Venezuela's opposition leader as the election winner, rather than then-incumbent Nicolas Maduro, who electoral authorities had declared the winner.
The report said Maduro was taken by US forces in January and has since been replaced by interim leader Delcy Rodriguez, a Washington ally.
The two foreign ministries said relations would return gradually. In a joint statement, the governments said they had decided to begin a gradual process for the full resumption of bilateral relations.
The announcement came days before Peru's conservative president-elect Keiko Fujimori was due to take office on July 28.
