PayPal sale talks with Stripe group reported by WSJ

PayPal is considering a new deal to sell itself to a group of investors that includes Stripe, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The talks follow a previous joint offer in July from Stripe and private equity firm Advent International to buy the digital payments company for $60.50 a share, which media reports said would have valued PayPal at about $53 billion.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the parties have continued negotiating since the earlier deal fell through and that a new agreement could materialize in the coming weeks. It was unclear how much any new deal might value PayPal.

PayPal declined to comment. Its shares rose after the report and closed nearly 1.8 percent higher.

PayPal issued disappointing profit guidance for 2026 earlier this year and has faced competition from other payment providers including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Stripe, founded in 2010 by Patrick and John Collison, remains privately held. Forge Global, which tracks private company share prices, says Stripe’s market value is close to $185 billion.
